Re: [LUG] Monitoring wifi usage.

I've got several wifi clients all mac filtered otherwise open. The router cannot tell me anything other than the ADSL line usage as far as I can tell, it cannot let me know the usage of each wifi client which I what I need!

My ADSL modem is not capable of logging individual usage so I was

What is the network topology?

If you encrypt the WiFi you'll have to watch it when it is on the wire,
and it all gets messy, but not WiFi specific.

Most clients can do better watching their own usage, and if you are that
remote it is probably a client you have.

Most of the ADSL routers are Linux and will often give the per interface
statistics (Packets Rx/TX, Bytes Rx/Tx) similar to the output of
ifconfig, which will show if it is Lan or Wireless (at least since last
power cycle) that is using the bandwidth.

We saw one last month, where a client got a "your website has exceeded
quota" warning, to discover someone in the USA had a borked Android
phone, and Android Download manager had downloaded the same PDF file
repeatedly for several days - bet they are glad it was on WiFi and not
one of our more exploitative UK mobile data tariffs.

It is better insight into this sort of traffic that tempts me to reflash
my ADSL modem, but I dread turning it into something that need more
maintenance. That and lack of native IPv6 support....
