I know that Nvidia graphic cards can cause problems with Linux. So 
what do you recommend instead?

Anything newer will work fine using the native nVidia packages.

Anything above GT430 will be powerful enough for Ubuntu 12.04+ in my experience. You'll find some good deals on eBay - I did.
I'd recommend adding the nVidia x-swat repos for that latest drivers. I 
did just that when recently upgrading from 6000 series to a GT430. My 
whole system is now massively quicker!
