Have any adjustments been made to the SuSE box (software updates, kernel
updates, iptables modifications) necessitating it's reboot?

You've sensibly tried to eliminate that possibility by trying another
machine, which implies that something has gone wrong on the modem.

Perhaps re-flash the firmware, presuming that's an option? Next up is
wireshark/tcpdump analysis.

This sounds like one of those 'interesting' problems...
