Stickmount needs root as others have said butNexus media importer will read files from a USB drive, flash, memory cards with an adapter and otg cable.
I've used it for some time now. As well as being able to read or stream files it can also copy them over to the nexus. I only thing you can't do without being rooted is write from the nexus to the external drive.
