A good start. What about graphics? Onboard Intel or separate nVidia (what model)? I think ATI is to be avoided but can be persuaded o therwise...

IMHO avoid nvidia like the plague. I have 3 nvidia machines that wont run OpenGL stuff well if at all - using nvidia's proprietary drivers and the intel machine runs fine. This could be an ubuntu/mint thing but as mint seems to use the same driver chain....
