In the end I installed Xubuntu 12.04. Yes, my daughter is familiar with
Linux, she had no choice as that is all I have used for 12 years. So far
it is looking good and is very fast. The laptop, by the way, is new.

And, yes, I do know Xfce well. I have it set up on my wife's laptop.
