Don't use Ubuntu, so I don't know if their installation disk includes any 
hardware detection progs, but dl a copy of Mageia and at the grub screen 
select memtest and run it, if it shows errors theres your problem, if it does 
not show any errors after doing a complete run, leave it to run over night to 
make sure.
If Ubuntu will finish booting run the command dmesg in a terminal as root/sudo, 
and copy /past it into an email for the list.
