Yes, mate is quite new. It is not yet deb-packaged. We will have to see 
how it develops but I expect most of those who can't or won't run gnome3 
will shift to xfce.
Trinity, however, has been going since the demise of kde3. TDE has been 
main desktop here since before Squeeze went stable with good results. 
They have some heavyweight devs (e.g. Timothy Pearson, ex-Kubuntu) and 
seem well-established enough to be taken seriously. The latest 3.5.13 
release is better than kde 3.4.10. There are bugs (so has kde4); there 
are no show-stoppers.
If you want to try Trinity with Debian Testing (or any variant of) be 
prepared for breakages, It works at the moment but you need a few libs 
from Squeeze.
