I have done this and thats exactly why you are getting "bleeding edge" changes thrown at you. I have a lot of distros but my primary is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, the LTS part being key as it runs until 2013 on the desktop. That way I have no surprises thrown at me and can merrily test with all the other installations I have got. I am sure you would have a similar experience of changes and breaking if you installed a Windows alpha/beta/RC except that Microsoft *has* to be more conservative in what they do.

That is probably why a few people on this list use Debian stable. I am in the camp that the "next gen" Unity/Gnome 3 changes are too confusing and laborious for my work flow as I use Linux at home and work. If that is the case for you check out XFCE as it seems to have come a long way over the past few years and is shaping up to be an ideal replacement for Gnome 2.xx.

The DE changes are both and advantage and disadvantage to Linux if it wants to "innovate". There is also nothing stopping people from using old desktop environments.
