I'm trying to install the latest version of HPLIP 3.11.10 (HPs latest open source drivers) on Ubuntu 10.04. The latest version in the Ubuntu Lucid repos doesn't support the printer I am using. If I run the installer or run configure I get this error:

error: Configure failed with error: python-devel not found

python-dev is installed though so I've run out of ideas... Any suggestions?
