So.. We were going OK with wifey ignoring her HP printer/scanner device and using the laserprinter - until the laser ran out of cyan - and it refuses to even print monochrome documents, so a new cart ordered (for a mere £110 )-:

Meanwhile she needed to print - so I did more looking. Decided to uninstall the hplip installed by Debian and get the one of HP directly - which involces compiling (my wife actually followed the steps, but because stuck when it asked her to install gcc...)

Just to ask, what is the problem with hplip?

I don't know. There might not even be any problem with it, but someone here suggested upgrading, and my wife herself googled and found the software directly off the HP site... So we upgraded (which I have subsequently un-installed)

What happens on her PC is that it will start to print a page, then stop about 3/4 of the way through. The printer driver will give up and mark the printer offline at that stage, requiring root password to re-enable it (although we solved that one - it seems that Debian adds the very first user into all the groups, but subsequent users added need to be manually added into e.g. the lpadmin group)

I use an HP photosmart and have never had to do anything more complicated than use the distro, kubuntu/ubuntu/suse, set up your printer thingy to get it working (this one is via a network, but also works from usb).

Very good. I'm happy for you.

After entering the printers address I'm always directed to choose the driver from a list. The problem maybe the distro not detecting the printer .

This is a continuation of an older thread - it's detected fine, prints 3/4 of a page then gives up.
