Maybe I'm just being cynical, but:
Never take *their* word for it. I was consistently told by BT that
there was no fault on my line. Eventually, after a certain amount of
blind luck (fault was intermittent but manifested itself whilst talking
to a BT droid, and she could hear the line noise), I got an engineer to
come out and repair *their* wiring in *their* junction box on *their*
pole *outside* *my* house. This took nearly three months to achieve.
