....assuming we can get Skype going..

I downloaded the deb file for skype and had problems with it until I tried
the static binary which ran fine.
Odd though as previously I'd used the static binary, had errors on launching
and had to use the deb !

Skype is ok on linux, but nowhere near as nice as the windows version, Can't
resize window, have to have small, double or full screen. Little things like
that are annoying.

Well... Skype is running on wifeys stock Debian PC with a logitech webcam. I went directly for the static version and installed it by hand, created a new menu thingy in Gnome for it and off it went...

(And we do seem to be able to view double size & full-screen... Maybe it's a newer version?)

However, while it works, it's hard to tell if it's working fully - it seemed to stop doing "stuff" like picture in picture and/or sending audio & video to the far end some times - however the far-end we were testing it to are the in-laws (Wifeys parents) who're in their 70's ... Their PC runs Win7... So maybe it's finger trouble at their end. Will try later on with her sister... (Who's on a Mac!)

And in a way, this is fine, even if Skype is owned by MS. That means that when it goes wrong, I can simply say "dunno, gov".... Also, I've more or less stopped taking on new VoIP customers too because I'm fed-up trying to argue with them about why they should pay me for a service when they have have Skype for free.... (Businesses are using Skype! I find this pretty incredulous, but there you are)

SIP based video phones have failed for us too - they work great - when you have full control over everything and people are willing to pay for decent broadband, but when faced with cheapskates who doesn't seem to care, then it's a bit of a struggle )-:

Ah well, come the revolution...
