Problem solved I am sure the gnome set up would be much easier but.. 1) Basic guidelines as in http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-debian.phtml 2) I adapted the basic guidelines from the tips in http://www.acampbell.ukfsn.org/linux/vpn.html 3) Once the tunnel was connected then following the http://www.acampbell.ukfsn.org/linux/vpn.html I routed all traffic over the pptp 4) Then mounted the server using mount.cifs. I found that I had to specific the server address using ip= command mount.cifs //serveraddress/ local_mount_point/ -v -o user=my_user_name,password=my_password,iocharset=utf8,_netdev,uid=henryb,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,domain=TNWD,ip=my_server_address_that_I_connect_to Still to resolve: - A quicker way to connect - Route only some of the data across (ie just the mounted server) - I can copy files from the server to my machine easily but I cannot save the file attributes if I copy from my machine to the server - I cannot get the web outlook open over the VPN, but the more I use outlook the more I understand why I gave it up several years ago -- Henry Photocopies or faxes of my signature are not binding.
