Grant,
  I use this option all the time;quite why I didn't think of it, I don't know!  I think that when I uninstalled Unity and then logged in as Mabel, the default Desktop is the Unity one (as you said) and so showed up blank as it were.   Choosing Classic has resolved the issue.  Thanks very much, Grant!  It's all about the learning . . .  :-D
