I think that's technically not true as these changes should be stored somewhere and I can't think of a place to store them other than the hard drive. It's been a while since I last used it, but it I still have a Knoppix DVD lying around. It's useful to have available, if you have a PC with some kind of issue (especially if it runs a different OS, as this allows you to see whether it could be a software issue). Not sure if it is better/different than Kubuntu live cds though.
