You might be right... But it's not hard to take precautions - I have an anti-static "zap strap", keep the PC plugged in, but turned off.
I've been told that spinning fans isn't good for them either - back EMF into the motherboard or some of them have their own little microcontrollers on-board now to do speed control, etc. Who knows... They might be right, but when faced with a PC that doen't work, what's the worst you can do...
