Hi

We are trying to set up Raid at the lighthouse. we have a server (the rack one ) that has 2x80 gb cards in and a raid card

Ah, I still have the IBM one...

is anyone available on friday to help us with this, please I should be around during the afternoon.

I'm probably heading to Cornwall for the official launch of their new superfast broadband ... (as a supplier, hopefully - get one over for the clotted cream debacle!!! :-)

2. if there is a 2 disk raid system should the first disk have a dedicated /boot partition,

Not in my book.

Lilo makes it trivial to book off a RAID-1 (mirrored system) I imagine GRUB does too.

The whole /boot thing was a crude hack in the days when BIOSes couldn't address more than 1024 cylinders and disk sizes were spiralling. It's not needed these days, and I've never in my life built a server (or a workstation) with a separate /boot partition... (however I typically have a separate root partition which encompasses /boot, so it could be viewed another way...)

Ubuntu offers a cloud server which means that people can i guess log in to the system from anywhere, so if they are at the lighthouse from there but when they are at home they can equally log in from home and work on files etc

I don't really understand all this,

I've no idea what ubuntu does - which is why I stick with Debian.

If you can help but have some alternative distribution that will do the same job or can set up something other than a cloud system but that can offer the same functions please bring any disks

it would be nice to have a server up and running so we have a central location to save stuff too etc

The IBM one has 5 x 32GB drives - which will yield a mere 100GB of storage in RAID10 or RAID6 configuration - not exactly stellar by todays drive sizes, however..

I could probably get it to someone on Thursday...
