Used to get this regularly after every debian upgrade. My fix (YMMV):

0. Install aumix if not installed
1. Run 'aumix -I'
2. See if you can get your sound working using the aumix sliders
3. If and when you do, type 's' to save the settings to ~/.aumixrc

4. Edit your .profile to include the line 'aumix -L' to reload theseon login
