Don't forget that this is Mint not Kubuntu or Ubuntu. The settings may be slightly different.

Right click on the desktop which will bring up a dialogue box.
Selecting Activities will open a box across the bottom of the screen listing your current activities. Click the Unlock Widgets button and another button appears click on that to create another/new activity. Close the box, right click on the desktop and from the the dialogue select Lock Widgets.

I don't use Mint but AFAIK this is a standard procedure since at least KDE 4.5.
