The latter is almost certainly going to be the case. I suppose it depends on what keys you are talking about and possibly about the type of keyboard too. However, I've got a Microsoft keyboard and I've been able to use the media player shortcuts in Amarok. They're less likely to work by default though, but Amarok let me set my own shortcuts. If unsure, do an Internet search about the specific keyboard and see if it's compatible with Linux.
