OK starting a sort of sub thread to the above (references to open office can also include libre office I am not typing both) Lets say we want to present to the general public a similar way to that lug that was mentioned. We would need to appeal to the general public which would include children and families so: Start with a very quick explanation of what Open source software is (or what ever term we chose) what is the difference between, free software, OSS and FLOSS, etc. make sure everyone is on the same page. Concerns regarding how would using open office affect my child's ability to do school work, Solutions to schoolks insisting work is handed in or sent in in .doc or .docx format because the school uses related software. Open source - a students perspective, (this could cover how assignments need to be done or saved before submission and any issues that arise Open Source - a lecturers perspective (say grant for this) If Grant can make it work then other equally qualified lecturers should with a little effort can also make it work. We clearly need to think of age of audience or their parents here, college, uni and secondary schools are different, so we need to think carefully here. Open source - a home users perspective Use of OSS for internet, e-mail and every day tasks, now clearly there is a split here, as you can use OSS on Windows and go the whole way and install LInux and switch to OSS that way, for the latter, experiences of Itunes twitter, facebook and others may be of interest as people may want to use these tools if moving over to Linux, if they can't it may be better to advise use windows but you can still use Open office instead of MS office. Open source - a gamers perspective again for hard core gamers, I think moving to Linux may not be such a good idea, however as with the above you can always switch to Open office and other OSS tools where possible, and try out a few of the many open source games. Perhaps mention that in the humble bundle deals Linux users have donated more then windows and I think mac users ( you would need to research and present more data) Open source - a business perspective On different note, Henry uses OSS at home to help run his business as does gordon so perhaps a look at how this works, and that this IS possible. What we can do is give people the tools to think about what they use their computer for, and ask if they need windows, or at the very least do they need to buy MS office and others. do they use enough of the features to justify, can they be equally productive on OSS. end note During various talks we can signpost people to either websites or hand outs we have with us, do we need projector and screen or do we have hand ots with important points printed on so guests can take them away. we may then only need to bring a printer with us to run off copies as required.
