In Debian you have "remove" and "purge", only purge would remove the
config files.

In Debian one can straight "reinstall" which will (depending on config)
ask if you want to reset any config files to default. However if they
haven't been changed there isn't much point.

He notes it is up to date.

If he wants to try and work around the problem this way, Debian Squeeze
has gdm3, but there is no guarantee it won't fail the same way, and gdm3
may need to be installed manually after an upgrade. My thoughts is it
may make finding the problem harder if it doesn't go away.

You may find that a reinstall may load a newer config file which may be more appropriate as you may have kept a 'working' one during an upgrade of the package.
