Do you need decent graphics hardware etc for a NAS box,

No but Graham was talking about running XBMC which is a media player
application. A dual core Athlon can handle 720p HD video pretty easily
but on the slower CPUs playing 1080p (i.e. FullHD video) can generally
help with hardware acceleration.

I'd recommend AMD > Nvidia personally.
But I'd also recommend Intel > *

I have a Lenovo Thinkcentre running XBMC which is Intel graphics based
and works beautifully in 1080p.

I'd suggest looking at picking up a second hand thinkcentres. My
supplier [ignore the website] is www.greenh.co.uk

What spec ThinkCentre is that?

The P4 ones tend to be a bit power hungry. We use them where I'm contracting, overall I quite like them for their size and ease of use to get inside although I'd rather have a Core 2 Based one than a Pentium 4/D based one (although saying that the Core 2 models are getting to about 3 years old now so they're probably available reasonably cheaply).
