Ok, so the situation is I have a shiny new HDD for my lappy, and have

Have a look at this...

http://wiki.flexion.org/DNSMasqTFTP.html

It explains how to configure DNSMasq for TFTP.

If you want to netboot Debian then get the netboot files from here:

http://tinyurl.com/3ar5vx

Download the netboot.tar.gz file and extract it to /var/lib/tftpboot

When it's extracted you should a folder called debian-installer, a file called version.info and two symlinks, pxelinux.0 and pxelinux.cfg which link to debian-installer/i386/pxelinux.0 and debian-installer/i386/pxelinux.cfg respectively.

The folder debian-installer/i386/ should also contain a kernel, an initrd file and a boot screens folder.

Then when the laptop netboots, if it's successful your desktop should give the laptop an IP address and tell it to load the file /pxelinux.0, pxelinux will then load, pick up the config file from the server and then it'll come up with the Debian boot menu where you should be able to press enter to start the installer or select some advanced options.

Good luck.

The theory should work the same for Ubuntu 10.10, you can find the Ubuntu 10.10 netboot files here:
