[LUG] tar multivolume

G'day all,

We have an 8 tape LTO3 storage loader
We are using tar to backup to it...

tar -v -F/spider_eye/backup/bin/change_tape.pl -cf /spider_eye/backup/ dev/6474_tape --totals --index-file=/spider_eye/backup/log/ Sunday_2010-10-29:21:00:00_full_tar.idx --exclude-from=/spider_eye/ backup/full_exclude.lst /bod >/spider_eye/backup/log/ Sunday_2010-10-29:21:00:00_full_tar.log 2>&1

It works find and we can restore OK. (sort of)

We just needed to restore one file it was on tape 4 of 9.
So I stuck the required tape in and...

tigger:/restore# tar -Mxf /backup/dev/tape0 bod/SANY0076.MP4
tar: bod/data/Tmp/end.avi: Cannot extract -- file is continued from another volume
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: bod/SANY0076.MP4: Not found in archive
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

I cannot get past the fact that the file end.avi on on the tape prior to this one and this tape. As far as I can tell I should be able to restore from one tape because the each tape is an indvidual tar archive.

Am I doing something wrong?

You need only two tools. o /////
A hammer and duct tape. If it /@ `\ /) ~
doesn't move and it should, > (O) X< ~ Fish!!
use the hammer. If it moves and `\___/' \) ~
shouldn't, use the tape. \\\
