Re: [LUG] BIOS Settings

I have recently been given/lent some copies of Ubuntu 10.04. When I decided to try it out I found that the computer ignored the CD/DVD drive when booting. I have checked the BIOS and that drive is top of the boot list.

I have had the computer since April 2006. It has occurred to me that the CMOS battery for the BIOS could be dying. This might cause the BIOS to revert to its defaults, which may well have the hard drive as first in the list.

Is this likely/possible please anyone? Or should I consider anything else?

Thanks for any help

Neil

If your cmos is dying your should find dates set to 1/1/2000 or similar
Normally on resetting dates etc in the bios and re-booting the settings will be kept as the power supply should keep the data alive - you can tell when its lost as it normally tells you. Check the CD boots in another machine - its probably that rather than the bios
