I have Thunderbird 3.1 RC2 installed on Ubuntu 10.04 and it runs with no problems at all.

I dont see the memory problems that you cite and use imap for my mail accounts.

Just a further comment....my config file is ~./thunderbird which is set as default upon install and I have the client installed in the /opt directory.
