I post one message, disappear for a bit, return and my problems are solved :-D
hehe.

To all who commented, thank you very much. OO Draw is already
installed on my ubuntu machine. I have had a quick play about. It does
seem intuitive. I think I will opt for OO Draw for the poster but
explore Inkscape (thanks for the links Jon - book marked ;-)) for
future use. I must be efficient with my time at the moment, so not
having to go through much of a learning curve is good.
