Also, things like hovering over a music file starts playing it in the
background (to get a 'preview' of it)... might not work either
seamlessly or at all if the file manager in question is *not* running
within the Desktop Environment.

may be worth noting here that this works with files of a specified size, so you can say set things so files smaller than say 5mb will preview, anything else wont' this can be changed or it can in gnome.

kind of handy as if you had a really big file sometimes you don't want it to preview, likewise if you have just opened something in a music player the last thing you want is to move the mouse over another file and have that preview at the same time, which has happened to me

of course a way round that would be for something to detect if a file was already playing and disable previews for the duration of that playback, or is that already possible.
