For a start I don't understand why the new > set of permissions changed back. Shouldn't my change remain fixed? Other people have pointed out the correct solution (adding users to the lp group). The reason it changes back, for the record, is that device files don't actually exist on disk - they're created at boot time by udev. It's possible to configure udev to create them with different permissions - but there's not much point. -- Rev. Benjamin M.
