Listen to the last Mr DNS Podcast for an explanation of the signing of the root zone and time line.
It has been extensively tested, so I doubt they'll be substantive adverse effects.
On the other hand if your Internet connection is stuffed on May 5th this is one thing to check.
I'm more worried about the root not being signed, but this doesn't really help with that till at least July - ho hum.
