Hi Neil,

I forgot this previously. I have a NAS box on my network with a USB
port. As an alternative to buying a new router you could also put a
similar box on your system. This would allow you to share the printer
wirelessly (assuming your current router has WiFi) with the bonus of
having network accessible storage.

I've just ordered this one as an upgrade to my current box which only
has 10/100 connectivity so can be a bit slow for printing. I know
NewLink may not be one of the big boys of networking, but I've had one
of their NAS boxes for quite a while and it's not let me down. Very
well built, easy to put together, and Linux firmware - supports FAT32
and ext3 - dual drives enabling proper RAID support.

Kind regards,

Julian

I have had a look in Amazon. Seems expensive at GBP100, and two very
poor reviews. Surely a new router with a USB printer port would not be
that dear?

Neil

Hi Neil,

Fair point the router would be much cheaper, around £50-60. Regarding the reviews I tend to take them with a pinch of salt - I've seen them elsewhere better and I have my own experience to draw on of this brand. I've also seen reviews for other equipment betraying the fact that the reviewer hasn't bothered to read the manual, e.g. whinging that they couldn't get online with a particular router when the manual plainly states that if you don't put the router on *first* you won't get online.

Anyway, yes the router would be cheaper - but you wouldn't get the network storage (if such a thing would be useful to you), also I would check reviews in more than one place - this goes for any purchase tbh :)

Kind regards,

Julian
