If you're just starting out get a VPS with Bytemark or Bitfolk and go
from there.
I don't recommend running virtual machines as it's a major PITA. It's
only what you want to do if you're a serious hoster yourself imo. If
you and your mates just want to dip your toes in, a cheap VPS is the
very best way to get started.
