Investigating this further its got nothing to do with compiz, it happens
if you run xkill and click on the desktop (e.g by accident) you then
lose nautilusk,which is what xkill is meant to do,  it just that in
doing so you end up witrh the xdisplay and no desktop (icons , wall
paper etc) and clearly users are expected to know what to do.

To get it back just do alt-f2 type nautilus to re run it.  I was just
surprised it would let you do this,  without question, ok xkill is
designed to stop crashed or dead applications, which it does.

anyway its useful to know and as i said i investigated it further, so if
you hear of anyone with the same issue,  you know how to fix it.
clearly xkill is powerful so just missing an app window causes this.
