Re: [LUG] Memory Sticks

Just remember, when deleting files under Linux, to empty the trash before removing the drive, otherwise it stays on there.

I also agree with the point made below about safely removing the drive. I have had file corruption when not being careful to do this.

As file corruption can happen with pen drives, I have a separate pen drive for backing up files and another different one for transferring them between laptops. Since I started using 2 different drives rather than the same one, I have had no problems at all.

I use a 16gb Bytestore for Amazon for backing up - if you buy this, make sure you get it for the £17.99 price, as the price does fluctuate.  Apart from that, I use all different ones (kingston, sandisk etc.).

What also works well is an SDHC card in a reader. You can get an Integral USB 2.0 SD Card Reader (currently 1.40 on Amazon) with a 16gb SD card for £17.99 and you have (effectively) a "usb drive" for transferring files and a spare SD card for use in  cameras, MP3 players etc.

They all seem ok when I've tried them. One thing is to remember to unmount
it before removing it. And despite what windows says, use the safely remove
hardware button before removing it when running windows.

Subject: [LUG] Memory Sticks

My wife has a laptop, Windows XP, I have a laptop, Linux Mint and the
family has a desktop, Kubuntu Hardy.

I was wondering about getting a memory stick as a means of transferring
data.

Are there any things, traps, pitfalls, etc to watch out for? I suspect
there might be some brands that are not very good on Linux.

thanks,

Neil
