I think this is where SSDs come in. Removing the moving parts to
remove one reason for failure (heads impacting on platters) and the
energy costs for those on the move, but they are increasing the
capacity on those too. I think eventually the move will be away from
the traditional HDD and into SSD and then the improvements will be
made on those. The major issue is the limited writes with current
flash technology. We overcome that, then HDDs will go the way of the
Zip Disk.
