I followed some instructions which referred to Ubuntu Jaunty (my version of Mint is based on Jaunty) and it seems to have worked. There is a switch on the laptop which turns on the wifi system and it now has a blue light. Also it has found my wifi ESSID and seems to be using it. After all your help I hardly like to ask yet more questions, but here goes anyway. I assume that I will either be using the wifi link or the cable link, but obviously not both at once, even if the cable stays in place. So, if I connect to one does that automatically disconnect the other? thanks again Neil -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
