Mint will take LXDE but there is a minor annoying bug at least on the machine used it, whenever you boot up the sound is muted and about 1/2 way no matter where you left it.

I asked on LXDE forums and noone knew of a fix.

Well, it is quite slow, but I assumed that was due to using a laptop
instead of a desktop computer. I will definitely look at LXDE.
