I am sure tar stands for tape archive, ok it can be used for other media
now.

tar is indeed Tapw Archive. But remember that in *nix everyting is a file, so you can dump a file to tape by simply doing:

  cat file > /dev/rmt0

Where rmt0 is the device name (typically st0 under Linux)

'mt' is the usual tape control program. Can be used to rewind, eject and make tape drives whirr and make funny noises...

Tapes are old technology though - they're way behind disk in terms of capacity, but still hanging in there though... Lots of dinosaurs seem to still like them! PITA to do a multiple tape backup no-matter what software you're using. Actually not maybe a PITA to make the tapes, a royal PITA to do a restore...
