How many slides are you talking about here?

You may find it's easier to drop them down to Truprint and ask them to
transfer them to CD. Saves you the hassle of scanning them yourself, of
course that depends on how many you have and how much it costs (not sure
off the top of my head).

I haven't counted them but there must be over 30 slide boxes with 36
slides in each. So over 1,000. Obviously I wouldn't want them all copied
but even so it would no doubt be very expensive to have them
commercially copied.

Yeah probably. If it was a case of say, 20 or 30 then it might have worked out more cost effective. I dare say getting some sort of scanner, or as mentioned a digital camera attachment (which is a new one on me, although it makes sense I guess) would probably be a better and more cost effective option in the long run.
