the controller card's bios detects it. the mobo's bios doesn't say anything about the controller card.

Do you have another SATA drive installed which is working?
yes a 1TB on the same controller card.

Is the drive detected in dmesg?

You could also be worth downloading the Samsung drive diagnostics (I believe they generally have an ISO available) and test the drive to confirm it isn't faulty.
seems i need the model number so i'll try that when i can be bothered to pull the drive out. It's a bit spagetti in there.
