I got a new 1.5TB sata drive (samsung I think). The drive is detected by my sata controller on boot and /dev/sdb appears. It sounds DOA.However I've no idea what distro your running, so no idea of what's lurking under the bonnet which may be trying to mount/lock/something with the drive or not ..
