[LUG] Intel and Transgaming to bring games to TV

Hi folks,

Just read about a possible interesting development going on. It seems that Intel along with Transgaming have been working on a system to bring games to the TV.

Now this might not seem so exciting at first, but Transgaming are known for Cegeda which is a subscription implementation of Wine which supports popular Windows games on Linux (and IIRC also the Mac).

According to the site (http://www.gametree.tv/) the new system is built on Intel architecture (so presumably x86, and if it's going in a TV I'd guess either an Atom CPU or a low power Core 2). It supports 3D games, Flash and also Linux games.

It appears that Transgaming are hoping to work with games developers to port games using their 'core enablement technology'.

So maybe, this might mean that if games developers work with Transgaming, it may mean that ports of more Windows games are finally available on Linux which in turn would resolve one of the excuses of Windows folks - Linux won't support games.

Okay, chances are this may be locked down, but on the other hand they may make it possible for Linux developers to build versions of their applications on this platform (a bit like Microsoft make it possible for developers to create and release games on XBOX Live using .Net). Who knows, maybe in the future we could be playing with Tux Paint, Super Tux and Tux Kart on the TV or set top box?
