I've seen failures in installs on more than one operating system.
X went odd a couple of days ago, after fscking the relevant drive and continuing the install it ran again.

In similar situations with Windows the situation has been harder to retrieve, and the possibility of continuing to work in a couple of xterms and GUI applications running without the window manager has not been there.

I particualrly note that when new versions come out the likelihood of crashing the system by adding hardware for which a driver is packaged in Windows seems to me to be higher.
