You should be able to find memtest86 on an Ubuntu Live CD (in fact I 
think it's on all Ubuntu CDs) and probably a few other distros too, just 
choose the option to test memory on the boot menu. Otherwise a boot CD 
ISO or floppy image can be downloaded from http://www.memtest86.com/ 
(it's free, released under the GPL, just select Free Download).
