Is the case a standard ATX case? If it isn't I'd say it's probably not worth doing much with as you could probably pick up something like an Athlon XP or low spec P4 on Freecycle nowadays. > Just wondered if anyone out there had any suggestions as to what I could > use, looks like the motherboard has a built in geforce mx440 chipset. > > Sounds doubtful, the Geforce 256 had only just come out around the release of the P3 733 and they weren't making them into integrated chipsets then. > I am doing this on low budget, but if i can have some ideas as to what > I can put in to the case (even if I upgrade the PSU first), it may put > new life in to it > If the case is a standard ATX case you MAY be able to get away with putting a newer motherboard in there, but it's a case of finding one. I have a couple of Athlon XP motherboards but they have leaking capacitors and to be honest I'd probably end up knackering them trying to re-solder new capacitors in them. You could have a look at eBay as you may be able to pick up a cheap board and CPU although saying that DDR memory is expensive nowadays and new boards are cheap. For instance you could probably pick up a Socket AM2 Sempron CPU for about £20, AM2 motherboard with integrated graphics for about £30 and 1GB of DDR2 memory for about a tenner. You'd probably need a new PSU as it's likely a P3 PSU won't be compatible (it's likely not to have the 12V ATX power connector) but it would probably work out about the same as getting an old board, CPU and memory off eBay. > Thanks, It may be soemthing I can bring along to resurection day, if we > can get something along those lines, that way anyone with spare parts > who also attends, we can perhaps build something useful. > I still have those K62 450/500 boards and CPUs for you if you still want them. They're AT sized but will work with ATX power supplies. Technically they could be made in to a slow Linux cluster.
