Ah, that was the issue. I'd forgotten that.

I have an old Win2K box which I still use for my accounts - one day it'll 
"just die" then I'll be forced to use something else, however it's an old 
Dell and seems bomb-proof ... I ran up ie6 on it - which is all it has and 
it seemed to view a few websites OK which I know have PNGs in it, but...

I'd agree with you there. So shoot all the banks, etc. who still use it on 
their desks...
