SpinRite is the way to go if attempting a self-recovery.
http://www.grc.com/intro.htm  if SpinRite doesn't recover it, then it
most likely can't be except by forensics services.

btw - making a clone of the drive doesn't necessarily grab the old
deleted/formatted underlying data!
