 From what I understand Totem will play MP3s, WMA etc.  When you try and 
open them it will say that it needs reistricted extras (IIRC there are 
good, bad and ugly ones) which you can install through Totem's GUI. 
Although personally for the media stuff I play I have enabled the 
Medibuntu repositories.
